// 01 — The concept

Knowledge, then a build, then six hours on the clock.

A progressive, university-focused AI engineering and ML Ops buildathon designed to move participants from knowledge validation to MVP development and an intensive on-premises build experience.

Hosted by the IEEE Computer Society of KDU and open to undergraduates across Sri Lanka. Three phases, one shortlist, and a final day that ends with your project on a stage.

// 04 — Eligibility & rules

Read this before you register.

Who can enter

  • 01Undergraduates enrolled at any recognised Sri Lankan university or higher-education institute.
  • 02Teams of 2 to 4. Mixed-university teams are allowed; each member registers individually.
  • 03No prior hackathon experience required. Phase 1 is the only gate.
  • 04All members of a shortlisted team must attend Phase 3 in person.

Rules of engagement

  • 01Phase 1 is attempted individually, with no external help. Detected collusion voids the attempt.
  • 02Open-source libraries, pre-trained models and AI coding assistants are permitted and must be declared.
  • 03All Phase 3 code is written on the day, in the venue, in a fresh repository. Phase 2 work may be referenced, not copied wholesale.
  • 04Teams retain ownership of what they build. The committee may showcase submissions with credit.
  • 05Judges' decisions are final. The committee reserves the right to amend the format with notice.

Full rulebook published with the announcement on 12 Sep 2026.

// 05 — Evaluation criteria

How the judges score you.

Phase 3 pitches run seven minutes plus three for questions. Every project is scored against the same five axes, weighted as below. Provisional weights — confirmed with the rulebook.

// 10 — FAQ

Questions, answered.

Anything still unclear, mail the committee and we will add it here.

01Do I need a team to register?

No. Register as an individual and attempt Phase 1 alone. Teams are formed after the shortlist, and the committee helps solo participants find one.

02What does the Phase 1 quiz cover?

Machine-learning fundamentals, Python, the model lifecycle and basic ML Ops tooling — containers, versioning, deployment and monitoring concepts. A study outline goes out with the announcement.

03Is there a cost to enter?

No. Entry is free for all three phases. Refreshments on the final day are covered by the organisers.

04Where is the on-premises buildathon held?

At KDU on 10 October 2026. The exact hall and reporting time are sent to shortlisted teams with their Phase 3 confirmation.

05What do I bring on the day?

Your own laptop and charger, your student ID, and any hardware your project needs. Power, network and workspace are provided.

06Can we use AI assistants and pre-trained models?

Yes, and we expect you to. Declare what you used in your pitch — judges care about the engineering decisions around the tools, not abstinence from them.

07Is the Phase 2 problem statement the same for everyone?

Yes. One statement, defined by the organizing committee, released to every shortlisted team at the same moment.

08Do I get a certificate for taking part?

Everyone who competes on the final day receives a certificate of participation. Winners and special-recognition teams receive theirs at the closing ceremony.
